5 questions to ask before getting lip fillers

Natural looking lip fillers

Lip fillers remain one of the most popular aesthetic treatments in the UK — and they've come a long way from the overinflated results that gave them a bad reputation a decade ago. Today's approach is subtler, more personalised and increasingly difficult to detect. But not all practitioners deliver the same quality of results. Here are five questions that will help you choose the right person to treat you.

1. What is your medical qualification?

This is the most important question of all. Lip fillers involve injecting a substance into the lip tissue, which carries risks of bruising, swelling, asymmetry and — in very rare cases with unqualified practitioners — serious vascular complications. You want to know that the person treating you has the clinical knowledge to avoid these risks and manage them if they occur. Look for NMC registered nurses, GMC registered doctors, or GDC registered dentists with specific aesthetic training.

2. Can I see your before-and-after portfolio?

Any good practitioner will have a portfolio of real client results. Pay attention to whether the results look natural and proportionate — does the work enhance the individual's features, or does everyone look the same? A skilled injector tailors the treatment to each face rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

3. Do you offer a consultation before treatment?

A reputable practitioner will always offer a consultation — ideally a separate appointment before any treatment takes place. This is where your concerns, goals and medical history are assessed. If a practitioner offers to treat you at your first contact, without a proper consultation, treat that as a red flag.

"The consultation is where we assess not just what you want, but whether what you want is right for your face. Good results are always built on that conversation."

4. What product do you use and how much?

Premium hyaluronic acid fillers from reputable manufacturers like Juvederm, Restylane or REVOLAX are the gold standard. Be wary of practitioners who are vague about the products they use, or who offer suspiciously low prices — cheap fillers are often cheap for a reason. For most lip treatments, 0.5ml to 1ml is appropriate for a natural result; more than 1ml in a single session for a first-time client should prompt questions.

5. What aftercare and follow-up do you provide?

Good aftercare is part of a good treatment. Ask whether a follow-up appointment is included, what aftercare advice you'll receive, and what to do if you have any concerns after your treatment. A practitioner who disappears after treatment is not providing the standard of care you deserve.

At Clinic 8, every treatment includes a full consultation, aftercare guidance and a complimentary review appointment. We're also always available by phone and email if you have any concerns after your treatment.
