In an industry that remains largely unregulated in the UK, choosing the right aesthetic practitioner is one of the most important decisions you can make for your health and your results. This is a subject we feel passionately about — and one that has become more urgent following a series of serious incidents linked to unqualified practitioners in recent years.
Why qualifications matter more than you might think
Aesthetic treatments — particularly injectable ones — involve needles entering the body near blood vessels, nerves and other important structures. A practitioner who doesn't have the anatomical knowledge of a trained medical professional may not understand where these structures are, how to avoid them, or how to manage complications if they arise.
In the UK, anyone can currently legally administer dermal fillers regardless of their training or qualifications. This means that the responsibility for checking your practitioner's credentials falls on you as the patient. This should change with the proposed new regulations — but until it does, it's essential to do your research.
What to look for
- Medical registration — NMC (nursing), GMC (medicine) or GDC (dentistry). You can verify registrations on each body's public register online.
- Specific aesthetic training — Level 7 qualification in aesthetic medicine is the gold standard post-graduate qualification in the UK.
- A proper consultation process — no reputable practitioner should treat you without first assessing your medical history, discussing your goals, and explaining the risks.
- Insurance and indemnity — your practitioner should hold appropriate medical indemnity insurance for the treatments they offer.
- A real portfolio of results — with before-and-after photos of actual clients, not stock images.
"If a price seems too good to be true in aesthetics, it almost always is. The product costs alone for quality fillers and anti-wrinkle injections mean there is a floor below which reputable practitioners simply cannot offer treatment."
Red flags to watch for
- Offering treatment without a consultation
- Vagueness about qualifications or products used
- No aftercare information or follow-up appointment offered
- Significantly below-market pricing
- Treating from a non-clinical setting without proper hygiene standards
- Pressure to book immediately or to have more treatment than you asked for
At Clinic 8, we are transparent about our qualifications, our products and our processes — because we believe that informed patients get better outcomes, and because the safety of every client we treat is our primary responsibility. If you have any questions about our credentials or approach, we welcome them.
